Egyptian authorities have seized the Russian
crude oil tanker Dignity for failing to pay the required Suez Canal
transit fee, according to a crew member’s appeal to the Seafarers’ Union of
Russia (SUR).
The vessel is currently anchored at the Port of
Suez. Crew members have reported critical shortages of fuel and
lubricants, raising concerns over potential power failure on board. In
addition, 22 Russian crew members have not received wages for over three
months, prompting an urgent request for assistance.
In their appeal, the crew stated: “On October 15, our
vessel’s crew filed a claim with the employer demanding payment of outstanding
wages. As of October 28, the money has still not been transferred. The employer
ignores our demands.”
The report highlights that wage arrears are a
recurring issue aboard the Dignity. Earlier this year, in August, the seafarers
appealed to the SUR for help.
The situation raises concerns for both crew safety and
the operational status of the tanker as it remains detained in Egypt.
To remind, From 1 September 2024 to 30 November
2024, Black Sea MoU carried out a Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC)
focusing on Crew Wages and Seafarer Employment Agreements. The most
notable deficiencies found during the campaign were associated with:
- the
absence of signed Seafarer Employment Agreements (SEA) (42.2%); and
- delays
in wage or salary payments exceeding monthly intervals (24.4%).
