to lead the Catholic Church.
Some of the Origins of the previous Popes: Not all Listed: Did you know that
three Popes of the Roman Catholic Church were Greek?
Pope Anacletus (Cletus) – Served c. 76–88 AD. Born in Athens, he was one of the
earliest bishops of Rome and a disciple of St. Peter himself.
Pope Hyginus – Served c. 138–142 AD. Also from Athens, he helped organize the
Church hierarchy and dealt with early heresies.
Pope Eleutherius – Served c. 174–189 AD. He is believed to have been of Greek
descent. He helped define Christian dietary practices and welcomed converts
from many lands.
These early Greek popes helped shape the foundation of Christianity, proof that
Hellenic heritage runs deep in the roots of Western faith.
